Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189)

The Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189) is a permanent visa for skilled workers who are not sponsored by an employer, family member, or nominated by a state or territory government. This visa allows individuals to live and work permanently anywhere in Australia.

Key Features

  • Permanent Residency

  • Full access to employment and educational opportunities.

  • Allows eligible family members to be included in the application.

  • Enables unlimited travel to and from Australia for five years from the date of grant.

Eligibility 

To be eligible for the Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189), applicants must:

  1. Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect and receive an invitation to apply.

  2. Have an occupation listed on the relevant skilled occupation list.

  3. Obtain a positive skills assessment for the nominated occupation.

  4. Achieve at least 65 points on the points test, which considers factors such as age, English proficiency, work experience, and education.

  5. Be under 45 years of age at the time of invitation.

  6. Meet the health and character requirements set by the Department of Home Affairs.​​​

STATE NOMINATION (SKILLED MIGRATION)

Apart from subclass 189, state and regional sponsorship is an option as different Australian States have different criteria and requirements to apply for Skilled Migration (Subclass 190, Subclass 491). The State/Region also gives an applicant up to 15 additional points.

There was also an invitation round from Victoria last month, a lot of our applicants received invitations starting from only 65 points. ​​

Eligibility Criteria

  • You do not need to be working in your nominated occupation

  • No minimum work length required

  • Applicants from any occupation can apply

  • You need to be residing in Victoria or overseas
